Country Shape guide

How distance and closeness are worked out, and where the data comes from.

How to play

You see the outline of one country. Pick its name.

You have six tries. Each miss shows the distance and direction to the answer.

Closeness

Closeness runs from 0% to 100%. 100% is the right country.

The farther away you are, the lower it gets.

Ranking

Only your first round of the day counts. Guess it on try 1 for 6000 points.

Each later try costs 1000 points. A miss scores 0.

Distance and direction

Distance is the shortest path between two country reference points (great-circle distance).

It is not measured to the border. It uses the reference point Natural Earth gives each country.

Direction

The arrow points from the country you picked toward the answer.

It shows one of eight directions, such as north, northeast or east.

Closeness formula

Closeness comes from the formula below. km is the distance.

Examples

1000 km is 95%. 5000 km is 75%.

10000 km is 50%. 20000 km is 0%.

100 x (1 - km / 20000)

One country a day

The date picks the country. Everyone who opens it on the same day gets the same one.

A country does not come back within 30 days.

The day changes at midnight Korea time.

You can replay an earlier day. Those rounds do not count for the ranking.

Data and borders

Outlines, names and reference points come from Natural Earth 1:110m. It is in the public domain.

1:110m is a heavily simplified world map. Small islands and fine coastline detail can be missing.

Borders and names follow this data. They do not express a position on any territorial claim.

Disputed areas and dependencies are not asked. Only sovereign states with an ISO code are.
